Before You Play
Six principles every serious craps player knows. Curated with featured creators.
The house always has an edge
Every bet except true odds pays less than true probability. You can't beat the math long-term — you can only pick better bets and manage risk.
Pass Line + Max Odds = lowest edge
The Pass Line is 1.41%. Adding 3x-4x-5x odds behind it drops your effective edge to around 0.37%. Odds bets pay true odds — the casino has zero edge on that money.
Place 6 and 8 are the best Place bets
Both pay 7:6 with a 1.52% edge. The 6 and 8 hit more often than any number besides 7. Avoid Place 4 and 10 unless playing Buy bets at higher limits.
Skip the high-edge propositions
Any 7 (16.67%), Hardways (9-11%), Horn bets, and Field are fun-money bets. They lose money fast. If you play them, treat them as entertainment, not strategy.
Tables have moods — know when to leave
Hot tables with point-makers feel great but end in seven-outs. Cold tables eat bankrolls. Set a mental stop: up X, down Y, done. Walk.
Dealers are your friends
Toke the crew. Learn their names. A toke is 'for the boys' — usually a Place 6 or Hardway for the dealers. They'll watch your bets, correct mistakes, and make your session better.
